Artist Bio
Jasper Johns (born 1930, Augusta, Georgia) is a central figure in postwar American art, known for works that bridge Abstract Expressionism, Neo‑Dada, and Pop Art. After moving to New York in the early 1950s, he began using familiar symbols—flags, targets, numbers, and maps—to challenge conventions of representation and perception. Working across painting, sculpture, and printmaking, Johns became especially influential through his innovative use of encaustic and his pioneering collaborations with print workshops such as Gemini G.E.L. His work has been the subject of major retrospectives at institutions including The Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Guggenheim Museum, and he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011.
