Artist Bio

Harry Abend (1937–2021) was a Polish‑born Venezuelan sculptor and architect recognized as an important figure in Venezuelan modernism. After immigrating to Venezuela in 1948, he studied architecture at the Universidad Central de Venezuela and began his sculptural practice in 1958 under the guidance of Miguel Arroyo. He received the National Sculpture Prize of Venezuela in 1963 for his Forma series. Abend worked across sculpture, architectural reliefs, assemblage, and jewelry, with a practice centered on abstraction in materials such as wood, bronze, and concrete. He lived and worked in Caracas, with a significant period in London beginning in 1976, and his works are held in major public and private collections. He died in Caracas in 2021.
