Edward Skellenger, Framed Oil on Canvas, 24 x 18

$350.00

Oil on canvas by Edward Skellenger, dated 1961, this landscape reflects the artist’s affinity for quiet rural settings and finely observed natural detail. Birch trees anchor the foreground with their distinctive vertical rhythm, while a weathered cabin settles naturally into the rolling hillside beyond. Soft atmospheric light unifies the scene, giving the composition a calm, pastoral presence that speaks to Skellenger’s steady, traditional approach to mid‑century American landscape painting.

Artist Bio

Edward Skellenger was an American painter and illustrator active in the mid-20th century. He trained at the Art Students League of New York and is documented in the Smithsonian Institution Libraries’ artist registry.

He and his wife, Dorothy Eleanor Skellenger (1918–2013), owned and operated Birchwood Lakeside Cottages—a family vacation resort on Lake Cobbosseecontee in Winthrop, Maine (near Augusta)—for 25 years until their retirement. Skellenger created commercial illustrations for the business, most notably the 1961 advertising brochure (published by Pinewood Press, Canton, Maine), which is preserved in the Maine State Library’s digital collections.
