Artist Bio

Frank Leonard Allen (1884–1966) was an American painter and graphic artist best known for nocturnes, landscapes, and coastal scenes. Born in Portland, Maine, he trained at the Normal Art School and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and later studied at the Art Students’ League of New York and Harvard University under Denman Waldo Ross. Allen worked primarily in oil, watercolor, pastel, and drawing, developing a reputation for atmospheric views of New England. He was a longtime member of the Salmagundi Club and was elected an academician of the National Academy of Design in 1966. He died in Massachusetts the same year.
